friends, you have not lived until you have taken a shower long enough that your fingers get wrinkly.

sometime last week, i went to my mailbox to check my mail. it was more an exercise in futility because nothing ever comes in my mailbox. i just wanted to open the super cool alphabet combination lock. finally, after the second or third try, i managed to get the door open and lo and behold, not only was something there, but it was a blue slip. blue slips are very exciting. blue slips mean that someone has sent you something too large to fit in your mailbox. so i took said blue slip up to the counter and they gave me a medium sized box with the return address that read "yo mama."
that's always a good sign.
once inside the cafeteria, i opened the box and nearly cried. my mother had sent me Fall. allow me this moment to deviate from the subject at hand. look out your window (those of you in mobile). everything is either green or brown. step outside. if it's late at night, it may be as cool as 55 degrees. if it's daytime, it's likely around 80ish. it's far too hot to be wearing long sleeves. now, let me tell you what asheville looks like. first of all, it's ten to twenty degrees colder. it's very crisp there. second, the color. oh, the color. when it's fall in asheville, it is absolutely breathtaking. the sourwood trees turn scarlet, the sassafrass and poplar trees are golden and the maple trees are sometimes crimson, sometimes firey orange. in among these brilliant shades is the deep green of the firs--the hemlocks, the frasiers. and there's a distinct smell, a smell that can only be described as fall in the mountains. you'd have to be there to know what it smells like. this, among other things, is what i miss most about asheville.
back to my box.
my mother had sent me bittersweet--a vine with orange and red berries--a pumpkin, real nc apples, sourwood honey and waxed fall leaves that still had color to them. i have some red maple and sourwood leaves and some yellow sassafras leaves. i put them up on my wall tonight to remind me of home. that was quite possibly the best gift i've ever gotten.
now, after expounding on what i miss about asheville, let me tell you a story about why i'm here in mobile. this will be a shorter story as i'm starting to get really tired.
tonight at carpe diem, i had four people show up that i knew and could talk to, and four more that came specifically to see me. among this group was the brad hatter, who stayed at the shop for a couple of hours talking with friends. as i was in the back washing dishes, i text messaged him and asked him not to leave without giving me a hug. he said he wouldn't leave without a hug and later came to make good on his promise. when i hugged him, i said "thank you for coming to see me. it made me feel very happy." i really was delighted that he had shown up.
he smiled and said, "hey, you've got friends in mobile, alabama."
thus the reason i am here.

i must apologize for not writing on here sooner. shortly after the last post, my life became a whirlwind of theatre, carpe diem, church, costume shop and classes. as angela tends to write in much more detail than i, if you want to know about the theatre aspect of my life, read her blog. i completely agree with everything she wrote regarding this production--particularly as regards the people we've met. it's been incredible to get back in the theatre again. i've missed it so much. it's also interesting how much i've grown attached to this cast, despite the fact that all totaled, i've only spent about 25 hours with them. that's the trouble with theatre...you get very attached to people that you'll likely never see again. of course, if you do, it's under completely different circumstances and nothing's ever the same.
ah, theatre...
as for the rest of my life, i took a test on monday that was completely ridiculous. the teacher gave us a study guide, but then failed to follow it himself. absolutely
nothing on the study guide was on the test. not one word.
i was not a happy girl.
i got a job at carpe diem! most of you likely know that already, but i thought i'd mention it anyway. it's been good thus far. i started in the kitchen washing dishes and preparing food, but now they've got me up front taking orders and making drinks. i actually made my first official cappuccino for a customer on wednesday. apparently i'm learning faster than they expected, so hopefully i'll soon be able to work the register and actually do some good instead of being in the way.
i figure i can die happy now. i have achieved most of my top life goals:
1) angela uses firefox now.
2) i work at a coffeeshop.
3) i have a crew to hang out with.
4) i have a stick shift vehicle.
5) i'm back in the theatre.
life is good.

i just found the love of my life.
costuming.
i worked in the costume shop at school for something like 15 or 16 hours over the past two days and it was incredible. the costume shop manager told me that i could actually make a career of it. that was the greatest thing i've heard lately. when people as me what i want to do when i grow up, the best answer i've been able to give them has been something like "oh, i don't know" or "i'll figure it out when i get there." now i've figured it out! i want to work in a costume shop and get paid to do what i love.
cleverly enough, there's a position called an assistantship at school where i would work in the costume shop 12 hours a week and get a scholarship for doing it. i'm applying for it this week.
good night all, sleep well and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

JABBERWOCKY
Lewis Carroll
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe
